Plug-In Electric = No oil, no engine, no transmission.
For the transportation solution, there are many possibilities. But for personal movement which is the most desirable, I would choose the Electric Plug-In car. No oil at all. No engine. No transmission. I am not speaking of the PHEV, I am speaking of the PIE! Zero oil. They now have Lithium Ion batteries that can go 250 miles in one charge. Think of it, no oil at all.
The Electric Car is really a very simple machine and would be as quiet as a mouse. Quiet, no pollution, no oil, no black smoke, it must be a winner! Initially the PIE is only for those who can plug them in but eventually we could get the infrastructure in place so they can be charged while you work, sleep and shop. I vote for electric as the pollution source is at one place and the co2 and pollutants can be removed if they are created.
Additionally, the country is in need of electrical infrastructure and this is a good reason to rebuild the US electrical infrastructure.
I calculated that it costs $35,000 - 40,000 to keep a car running in gas and oil for 10 years or 250,000 miles and this includes oil and transmision changes.
The electric is in the initial stages of development and there will be many quick advances in only a few years. Press you government to move to plug-in electric as we really dont have much of a choice because we CANNOT continue to use oil. Dont take my word for it, ask Al and 10,000 scientists.

Who Killed the Electric Car - Visited
Unbelieveable.
I just saw the movie. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to see it go out and find it. This car was a fleet vehicle and was very successful. People who drove it wanted another or to purchase the car. But GM would not allow anyone to keep the car.
It could be charged very quickly.... in the time it took to fill your tank with gasoline !
It was taken off the market and no customer could purchase one or get a new EV 1.
GM collected and crushed all of the EV 1's. -- (This was never done for any other car.)
Today, there are new models in design and GM is working on the Volt now.
You must see this movie if you have not.
Plan to buy a new Plug In when possible. They are awesome...

Incremental step to the PlugInElectric
The electric generating plant can use many kinds of generation and we need a way for homes and businesses to feed the power grid; we need an open source electric matrix for the future. Ideally solar, wind or water but even if it is oil, nuclear or coal the power is generated and "cleaned" if necessary at one point. Today, gasoline and oil pollute everywhere including at the point of refinement.
And remember, that electric vehicles can capture breaking. This does not happen with petroleum cars.
When people demand by purchase and interest and investment then it will happen. It must happen because we dont have many choices. The ice has been melting for decades, it is not new. We really, really must act as there is little time. We need a "mega-investment" by every nation.
I am not saying this is a possibility. I am saying that this is a must, it is simple and it will be very effective. Hydrogen is complex and a decade away and it is not the solution. Hydrogen is a way to keep the technology complex and in the hands of a few. We want to go the other way. Like open source energy..... Ask Al Gore and his advisors.

We definitely need a shift in this direction
Basically an enclosed, larger, faster version of the segway. Or faster golf cart. Whatever analogy suits you. Adequate personal transport for the commute and local shopping.
Remember, though, that the electricity has to come from somewhere. So it is not a panacea. It requires non-fossil-fuel-generated electricity, or else technology breakthroughs to drastically reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired plants. And for this to replace the massive oil imports, we'd need to start burning a LOT more coal.
I am NOT saying this is not the personal transportation preferred direction, just that it still leaves a lot to do.

Who will build them?
works for golf carts...
The US manufacturers were so busy making gas hogging SUVs that they focused on nothing else. Now they can barely stay afloat. Where will they get the money for new research and retooling? They've used their profits to pay huge salaries to the CEOs. Will we have to support them with our tax dollars (and tax credits)?
Will Toyota and Honda be beating Detroit to the punch once again?
Who encouraged Detroit to make SUVs? Exxon?
The next big four
These companies are already selling electric vehicles. Tesla and Phoenix are in the US. One of the others already has several dealerships (one in Utah). I think these will be the next big four...

This could be a good idea ... If
This could be a good idea ... If, for instance, the roof of the car could be a solar energy panel which would able a vehicle to travel for more than just 250 miles during daylight hours. There are some people who would need to go quite a bit more than 250 miles before stopping.
I am just wondering if this would be possible. If a 600 square foot panel can supply enough power for two reasonable sized houses then 12-15 square feet of area should be able to power a single electric engine and keep the battery charged up enough to make some distance before discharging in night time conditions.
Do we have anyone visiting here or a member here with the technical knowledge to comment on this.

Plug In Electric is the quick, efficient, easy, immediate answer for now, if you have a convienient electical plug. If you do not have a PLUG then how can you get one?
And yes. Segway. Golf Carts. And Tesla's. The entire spectrum. Whatever works for you.
I wrote to Al. I wrote to Hillary. I wrote to Nancy. I write to you.
Talk, invest, buy, plan, purchase, think. Put your $s into electric if not now, then in the future. Or go very small gasoline.
