The old message board will preserved, at least for a while, I'm fixing some problems and will put a link up soon. However it will be locked from posting new comments.
I don't know how long I will be able to keep the old forum live, but I do hope to keep a backup copy indefinitely, even if it isn't actually online. Anyhow, for old timers wanting to dig out an old post, they can visit the cryogenicly preserved message board here:
Obviously posting, replying, etc. has been disabled. I will continue to improve the new and far more powerful site until your remaining concerns are addressed if possible... Already you can do many things here that were utterly impossible on the old AlGore.org.
Well, like I said in the subject line, you are going to figure a lot of this out sooner than myself and most other members.
In the previous forum incarnation I could see these simple 'reply' and 'quote' options in the upper-right hand corner of every post; it was intuitive and simple to use. I haven't figured out to directly reply to a post halfway through a thread so far. I notice that responses are indented differently and may be in different color backgrounds. I can't say that I'm a fan of that pale yellow. Is it gone? I guess not.
But then, to be honest, I have not fully examined all the formatting options link near the bottom of the page and the good-hearted and energetic people at work on this new design are enabling new features all the time.
OK, maybe I am starting to catch on a bit. replies by the original member who started the thread are white, not indented, and are bordered within a box with dark blue outlines. Replies from others are indented and appear as pale yellow when previewed and then light blue when actually submitted. The reply option is in the lower right corner but if you want to "quote", then members have to use the format option. Is that correct?
I know this is going to take me awhile to get my 'sea legs'. There are features here that I haven't explored and features I don't even know about yet.
What I was referring to about format options was the blue lettered line above the preview comment and post comment boxes that says "More information about formatting options".
Upon clicking on this line it take us into the "Compose tips" feature. I haven't gone through it that fully but that is what I meant by format options. I am not an IT person so I could be likely using the wrong terminology. I know that the word strong between the lesser than and greater than symbols results in bold text. The other allowed tags are not familiar to me. I would assume 'cite' allows the quotation of all or part of a prior post but I'm not proficient in any of this yet. Can you tell me how to use colored text?
yeah, I have been playing around trying to use various html tags. it seems to be limited to only what they list.- and some of those don't work. "strong" is bold; "em" is italic
I've tried various other html tags like "font color=" and "p align=center" in effort to get fancier, but it all gets ignored. They use a standard called XHTML, and have a link to the spec, but it only provided standards like requiring that tags be nested properly, and must be closed. I found a good discussion of xhtml in wiki
It implies you should be able to do pretty much anything, but with stricter rules. It may be that either this software limits what will work, or Dylan has not enabled everything yet.
here are illustrations; I intentionally replaced the"<" with "{" in the first occurance to get it to print
Glad you're getting your sea legs Wayne. :) You know we're doing everything we can to get the site Gore worthy on our end too-- still a long ways to go yet.
I have a question on how the "My buddylist" works. It seems that to invite someone to be your "buddy" you have to know their e-mail address. Or, can a member invite another member to join their list based on the members name only? I hardly know anyone's e-mail address now, especially since the old forums member list is not accessible. Can someone explain how this works?

yeah, i like it
it is clearly a much more powerful engine
still poking around...
the "syndicate" icon shows up sometimes in lower left, btw
one as-yet still missing feature of the old is "find replies to my posts"
fairly easy to do on the blog side, but in the forum its was pretty handy
yeah, i like it
One other little thing. How about being able to "quote" from previous blogs or posts when making a reply?
Like This?

A little more work, but it can be done. And with the "threaded" view, it is less necessary
"Grass" - a means of escape from reality, or a real means of escape for the planet.
But Don, you're smart, what about the rest of us?

well, i think you figured this out, but
you click on their name, scroll down to the bottom of their profile, and click "add to buddy list"
buddylist feature understood
Hi again dbciii
Yep, I figured that one out. Click on a name and then "add to buddylist". Thats it!
