Is this just a joke, or...

Is this citation from "Earth in the Balance", is some kind of joke? Stupid and sad joke I must to say...

"We learned, for example, that in some areas of Poland, children are regularly taken underground into deep mines to gain some respite from the buildup of gases and pollution of all sorts in the air. One can almost imagine their teachers emerging tentatively from the mine, carrying canaries to warn the children when it's no longer safe for them to stay above the ground."

Well, I`m living in Poland, and - what a surprise - I`m Polish... And this knowledge is absolutely new for me, and as I know for 100% population of my country.
I had no idea who tell Al Gore to write this sensational example, who was the source or inspiration.
Hello mister Gore! Poland is the center of Europe! Not in third world.

From another source:

Poland

According to the Polish Academy of Sciences, "a third of the nation's 38 million people live in areas of ecological disaster." In the heavily industrialized Katowice region of Poland, the people suffer 15 percent more circulatory disease, 30 percent more tumors, and 47 percent more respiratory disease than other Poles. Physicians and scientists believe pollution is a major contributor to these health problems.

Acid rain has so corroded railroad tracks that trains are not allowed to exceed 24 miles an hour. The air is so polluted in Katowice that there are underground "clinics" in uranium mines where the chronically ill can go to breathe clean air.

Licencia poetica?

I just cannot believe my eyes! Another disappointment! For last 7 years I have been nursing this illusion that Al Gore is an exception among the arrogant and ignorant Americans. I would have voted for him in 2000. I was furious with the Supreme Court that allowed stealing the presidency from him.
And I was convinced by his arguments in his movie ‘An Inconvenient Truth’.
Sorry, but the only inconvenient truth now is, that Al Gore does not check his resources and instead of basing his speech on facts, is spinning fantasy stories.
Never, even in the worst ‘communist times’ there was such a pollution in Poland that would make anybody dream about taking kids underground to the coal mines for some ‘respite’.
Mr Gore probably never in his life visited a coal mine…
Obviously he never visited Poland. If he did, he would know the difference between a salt mine and a coal mine and between Silesia and Krakow.
Because there is something to the story… There is a mine, an ancient (12th century) salt mine – currently a museum in Krakow, famous of sophisticated sculptures made of salt and specific microclimate. One of the caverns in this mine serves as a sanatorium or day hospital for people suffering with asthma.
The Salt Mines in Wieliczka, Krakow are recognised as an European Culture Treasure.
Some prominent Poles from Silesia have already talked about officially inviting Mr Gore for a visit…
But – how credible is he now?

The pot calls the kettle black

"Obviously he never visited Poland. "

Obviously you don't know shit about Al Gore.

Gore Congratulates Poland on Its Democracy
By JANE PERLEZ
Published: April 21, 1993

In his first major speech abroad as Vice President, Al Gore congratulated members of the Polish Parliament today on the progress their country had made in moving from Communism to democracy and capitalism.

Poland, where more than half the workers are in private enterprises and smooth democratic elections have been held, was showing the best economic and political health of the Eastern European countries that ousted Communist rulers in 1989, he said.

"In Poland the signs are, after all, a lot better than elsewhere," Mr. Gore told the main chamber of Parliament. "Travelers from the rest of Eastern Europe come to Poland and catch their breath. The Poles are keeping the promises of 1989. There is no lethargy in Poland; Poland is a land at work."

"The rest of Eastern Europe is inspired by your example, and so are we," he added.

Mr. Gore ended his two-day visit to Poland today after meeting with President Lech Walesa and talking to Polish environmental leaders. The focus of his trip was the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.

Please, before you teach others about fact checking try to do it yourself.
Now how much credibility do YOU have after this blunder?

If he did, he would know the difference between a salt mine and a coal mine and between Silesia and Krakow.

What a bullshit fallacy.

Anyone can know those two things even without visiting Poland.

1. Guess what? Not only Poland have coal mines. Tennessee, for example, have them too.
And Gore knows a thing or two about that state you know?

2. Did you ever hear about maps?

(No subject)

Not a third world country?

Yes. But not that far. Just like the rest of Eastern Europe.

This happened in the "communist era" when Poland was, well, even less unlike a third world country.
You guys had even more absurd and evil things happening over there.

Also, don't speak for the 100% of the population as you don't have a clue what more than 38 million people know or do not know.

I don't have to try to speak

I don't have to try to speak for the 100% of the population, as the fact I've lived in this region of Poland (Upper Silesia) for 37 years is enough to know for 100% that Mr. Gore's description is simply 100% load of bulshit.
It's obvious to ca. 4 milions of people living here, and to everyone who have ever visited this place.

Unfortunately I had no occasion to read Al Gore's book, but I hope the key point of it is the major role of USA in making contribution to earth's pollution and global warming effect.

I've written Gore a letter on this he should get it soon.

He should run just to save our lives. If we don't fix the climate then our society will collapse and die quickly. To the Honorable Al Gore if you don't run then NOONE will try to save our planet from an agonizing death. Put it back on the platform, and if we don't vote for Gore we might have as well voted for our own and our children's death.

Mr. Gore if you don't run at least encourage our next Democratic President to form an Internation Committee On the Restoration Of the Atmosphere full of our top minds on how to not only slow this but repair the ozone somehow put it back in the atmosphere.

You could live for 100 years in a country of the size of

Poland and you still wouldn't know even the majority of people and what happened to them.
You are not credible with such hyperboles.

"It's obvious to ca. 4 milions of people living here, and to everyone who have ever visited this place."

You cannot possible know what is obvious to 40 million people or even 1 million or 10 thousand.
In your entire life how many people do you get to know? If you say 1000 you may exaggerate.

"Unfortunately I had no occasion to read Al Gore's book,"

Then you have no moral right to say what he wrote in the book is bullshit.
Read it first yourself and then come back. And if you are indeed curious about why Gore wrote that
why don't you ask him before you judge him? You think he made it up? Then prove it. An accusation alone is not convincing.

I have no use of people who hear something here and there and then jump to conclusions without even bothering to question to source.

>I have no use of people who

>I have no use of people who hear something here and there and then jump to conclusions without even bothering to question to source.<

But you don't understamd that I'VE LIVED THERE for 37 years - and I perfectly know how this region looked like in the past and how it looks like now. For sure it has nothing to do with bullshit Mr. Gore wrote.

>You cannot possible know what is obvious to 40 million people or even 1 million or 10 thousand.<

Are you a 8-years child or are you kidding? If I wrote eg.: "In the state of Wisconsin white anglo-saxons hunt the black people on a massive scale, so afroamericans living there have to escape and hide in the forests", would you really have to ask 5 million citizens of Wisconsin about that to become convinced that's bullshit?

Do You ever leave the US and

Do You ever leave the US and be somewhere in the "rest-of-the-world"?
Well, it looks that You there in the US think that Polish soldiers are good - if they fight in American war. But Poland and polish citizens are bad in any other subject.

I don't think Polish soldiers are good

regardless of whether they are in Iraq or not. I don't think humans are good. Their nationality is irrelevant.

And yes I left the US and was in Poland, along with 5 other Eastern European countries in the early 90s. Incredible, isn't it? This planet is not particularly big.

"But Poland and polish citizens are bad in any other subject."

Not in any other subject. But they are pretty bad in many subjects.
To put it simply Eastern Europe sucks. Sorry.

Yes, I have.

tkdveg's picture

Yes, I have - I spent a month in China in 1985, which is near the time frame Gore speaks of in this segment of the book. The filth and pollution created by the burning of coal was repulsive. It was so thick in the air, you could feel it and taste it. It coated everything. On especially bad days, many did stay indoors to avoid it as best they could. Had there been "fresh air" mines to take respite in, I'm sure many people would have. A canary would have been nice to have, but all the birds had left. They knew better.

As for your soldier comment, I think all soldiers are just doing what they are instructed to do by our governments. Most Americans are against this unjust war, so to think that we dislike the Polish people and soldiers unless they are fighting "our" war is simply incorrect.

I'm not sure exactly where your information is coming from, but with all due respect, it is just not accurate. Please don't stereo-type us, and lump us all into one selfish, war-mongering bag. Right now, our government does NOT represent us, and we despise the reputation they have forced on us all over the world.

We are all humans who share this planet. What happens to you, affects me, and me, you. We are all one - now we all have to start behaving that way. Peace.
