Vanity Fair: Going After Gore

Al Gore couldn't believe his eyes: as the 2000 election heated up, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other top news outlets kept going after him, with misquotes ("I invented the Internet"), distortions (that he lied about being the inspiration for Love Story), and strangely off-the-mark needling, while pundits such as Maureen Dowd appeared to be charmed by his rival, George W. Bush. For the first time, Gore and his family talk about the effect of the press attacks on his campaign—and about his future plans—to the author, who finds that many in the media are re-assessing their 2000 coverage.

Better late than never

Thanks for the link. Good article. How the Gore's were tormented. The media need to hold themselves accountable but so does the public. It is all about a catchy headline-the stuff people love to read in the tabloids. But for politicians and journalists, that's pathetic. Whatever happened to investigative reporting? Holding a candidate responsible for speaking the truth and identifying their positions and plans. Who the f cares what they are wearing? And to purposefully twist a quote to poke fun is simply sophomoric. I'm sure Gore dreads a full on media blitz. But imagine what a profound difference good journalism could make-raising the bar of professionalism and responsibility of our candidates.

It is a step in the right direction to see some reflection on the media's inexcusable behavior during the 2000 election. But there is such a long way to go.. I can only hope that the herd mentality that was partly responsible for distorting the story will eventually turn around. How many people still believe that John Kerry faked his wounds to get Purple Hearts, that Global Warming is a plot by Al Gore to take their money, and that George W. Bush is a courageous leader with integrity who is supporting our troops?
