Michael Goodwin of NY Daily News thinks Gore is a real nightmare....

A RRT member's response:

Al Gore for president in 2008 ~ A real dream

Mr. Goodwin states in his article that Al Gore would not only lose a bid for the Democratic nomination for president but would cause Democrats to lose the White House in 2008. He also maintains that Gore is "itching to run." With all due respect to Mr. Goodwin, he has no way of knowing any of this. He is entitled to an opinion. He states : "it would be a loser for him." But let's be clear that the obviousness of Gore's "itch" to run may not be shared by all. Those on the right might find it convenient to assert Gore's "itch" as a given, for it might help them justify attacking Gore now rather than wait. And why wouldn't they want to wait? Because, perhaps, of a cold, clammy fear that not only might he run, but that he's a real knockout in the best possible sense. He is, most definitely, the antithesis of a loser.

It is true that Mr. Gore has refused to rule out a run. The problem for the wringing hands on the right is that he also refuses to say he will. Who is really fantasizing here?
Though Gore supporters might welcome a "vault to the head of the pack" as a result of an Oscar and possible Nobel Peace Prize, for those on the right it truly is a nightmare.

Mr. Goodwin talks of Democrats "inability to make a commitment to anyone or anything." and attempts to cast Gore as a prime example of this. This is the kind of ridiculous statement that has been allowed to go unchallenged by those on the left for the last six years. Failure to respond to these kinds of irrational attacks has been one factor in keeping the Republican fantasy of their entitlement alive. In real life, to use Mr. Goodwin's phrase, the Democrats are beginning to come together and represent the voters who elected them. The long overdue investigations of this administration currently unfolding are but one example of this. The 2006 elections are also indicative of a sea change. Gore is an example of commitment par excellence. Anyone who has watched him work on behalf of our planet only need open his/her eyes. Global warming is a 25-year plus commitment of Mr. Gore's which is well documented. Those on the Right have adopted a Rovian strategy of attacking people's strengths and used it repeatedly. It is an ancient psycological war tactic. They don't realize quite yet that this game has become transparent. People are on to it. Mr. Goodwin's statement about Gore's lack of commitment is a perfect example of this strategy for the ability to commit is plainly one Al Gore's greatest strengths. It is a strength that the present occupant of the White House believes he has, when in reality all he has is obstinacy aided by willful ignorance.

It escapes Mr. Goodwin how Gore could be more attractive than either Clinton or Obama to voters. It does not escape a great number of people. Gore has charisma, funds, good people behind him, star power, energy, incredible brilliance and yes, freshness. What could be fresher than someone like Gore who has renewed and reexamined his life after the debacle of the stolen 2000 election? He has chosen to serve with even greater resolve and dedication as his answer to life's mysterious twists and turns. It may escape Mr. Goodwin but it is crystal clear to many that Gore is a true leader and what this country needs.

A few thoughts about Mr. Goodwin's view that wishing for Gore presidency is nothing but a fantasy. Those hoping that Gore will run are working create a support network should he decide to run. This is taking action in order to impact his future decision and become part of this equation, not fantasy. An example of fantasy might be a president who thinks we can win in Iraq or John McCain's belief that American's believe Baghdad is safe. No matter how many armed guards and helicopters protected Mr. McCain's power shopping spree in Baghdad, it does not create reality. Reality is that Iraq is engulfed in a civil war. Upon Mr. McCain's departure, that safety vanished.

Mr. Goodwin, Democrats do not "eat their own." They rightly put country above tribe, unlike Republicans. They engage in debate, dialogue, introspection and the reasoning process. Without this there is no Democracy. The new kind of Democracy touted by our present "leader" makes a mockery out of truly free speech. Perhaps he might call it "bickering", a word you used to describe Democrats. If what Democrats do is bicker, then let us have more of that.

You mentioned the GOP "culture of corruption" in quotation marks. Was that to imply that it really isn't a culture of corruption? What then is a situation where Senate pages are not safe on the Senate floor, Cheny's friends get all the juicy contracts in Iraq, Karl Rove outs a CIA agent and still sits in the White House, and the likes of Jack Abramoff have a free pass to the people's White House? There are only a few examples. I realize it's hard for a Republican to see their party crumbling. Maybe if they had "bickered" a bit more they wouldn't be trudging lock step toward the cliff they are now headed over (in droves) due to blind obeisance to the clan.

You are right about the following: "Gore, of course, knows about close votes, having won the popular vote in 2000." You also said he is " a lousy canidate." About that, let me say this.
I believe that America is ready to redefine what a good and bad candidate is. A good candidate is no longer good because he/she might be fun to have a beer with. A bad candidate is one who even remotely resembles the current occupant of the White House. President George Bush has turned out to be one of the most incompetent and dangerously dishonest presidents in our history.

Mr. Goodwin cautions that if Gore runs, "Old doubts about his authenticity would surface, including that he paid for advice on dressing like an alpha male. Even his personal commitment to the environment is suspect, with his carbon-spewing lifestyle already the butt of late-night jokes..."

It is pretty safe to say that "old doubt" real or fabricated will be trounced out about any candidate that runs for president in 2008. Gore "dreamers" as you like to call us are fully awake and very excited because Al's supporters know that he is a combination of talent, vision, and intelligence all wrapped up in one spectacular package. More than that, he is an exceptional human being. As our Michigan Gore bumper stickers proudly state:

Courage ~ Brains ~ Integrity - Al Gore 2008

Nightmare? Al Gore is a real dream.

Is the issue the environment or energy and water?

As important and emotional as the environment is, i think we Gore believers need to take a page out of his "Assault on reason" and expand the discussion beyond ecology.
The energy crises and the emerging water crises, including world health implications
of sanitation and water borne disease, and more importantly the economic implications
and related geo-political and military and terrorism directions and policy questions are the real issues that affect us today. Arguing about the validity of ecological forcasts are a distraction to the leadership needed in 2008+. To dismiss or support Al Gore based on things that can't be evidenced in 2007-2016 ( the campaign period plus the potential 8 year term of the next president) is a disservice to the public. No one wants to touch the idea that world energy is not free enterprise at work, but a combination of ologopolies and cartels hanging onto the fossil fuel legacy in terms of short term profits. Not that it's an axis of evil, but a situation that needs leaders to get the world to seek lower cost clean energy which in turn would lower the cost of desalination as a major component of improving both world economics and health..both particularly beneficial to the US economy and world peace. The reason this subject can decay into a discussion that clean energy can't be lower cost is because you have to commit to volume to produce
scale economics. This committment to change is the issue. The byproduct is the improved ecology by lowering carbon emmissions. World energy demand is about
450 quandrillion( thousand trillion) btu's or 1.3 trillion gallons of oil equivalence. With those numbers in mind, you can see that Bush's plan for 35 billion gallons of cellulose ethonal is an eye dropper on a forest fire...the fire being the suppression of US and world economics and health, not to omit famine and other issues caused by drought. That's why we need Gore leadership. The next time you are pumping $3.00 - $4.00 per gallon gasoline in your car, ask yourself if this is free enterprise at work? Yes it's cheaper than a gallon of Coke, but Coke can't serve the issues of the twenty first century the way that driving to a new lower cost, yes lower cost, energy and water paradigm can. Don't let Al Gore's value be isolated to a single issue, as important as it is. He wouldn't have written an "Assault on Reason" if he didn't know that. Don't let the leaders of denial take us down the garden path of arguing about ecology forcasts. By the way, do you know who the largest desalination based fresh water producer in the world is? Saudi Arabia. Why? 1. They need the fresh water. 2. They can afford the energy to produce it!

Could some pass this message to Al Gore?

To Mr. Branson and Al Gore,

You are offering $25 Million dollar price to reduce the global warming, all I need is $5 Million dollars to achieve a new free energy powered by compressed air to run cars, boats, electric generators, and power plants with zero cost and zero pollution by a pure air!

We've register this new revolution technology that will reduce the global warming by 30% within the next five years!

We've tested this new technology on a motor bike and a four cylinder engine and it works more than what we've been expected!

We are talking about replacing just a few parts on a existing fuel engine to run on compressed air within 3 hours work with a $3000 overall cost and run a car with no need to refuel air once every 5 years!

We can approve that our technology is working for 100% we need help in funds to make this technology works on every car and every, bike, boat, and even airplanes!

Imagine that if we get the help and funds available we will solve the global warming within a very short time!

All we need is someone to get this feedback to Mr. Branson or Al Gore to give us a chance to turn this dream come true!

Scientific Fact.

Robert Moist

I am more than a little weary of hearing that science does not support the impending environmental crisis that Al Gore so courageously and tenaciously continues to alert our species to. The year 2050 has been predicted as the "tipping point" year. The year, that among other things, the Antarctic Ocean will no longer be able to absorb any more of the Planets CO2, hence increasing the rate of atmospheric warming, resulting in the melting of the Antarctic ice mass thus releasing an even greater amount of the "green house" gas. This was predicted as the point where the downward spiral would be irreversible. Bad news. Last week in a short inconspicuous article in an obscure source, was a recent scientific observation that, as of today, the Antarctic Ocean is saturated with CO2. It will not accept any more. We've reached the "tipping point" 43 years earlier than predicted. It is absolutely imperative at this point we have someone with passion about this crisis in a position where he (or she) can emphasize and take some drastic corrective action now. Al Gore has already more than adequately proven over the past 20 odd years that he has that passion, and is the best equipped to handle the environmental crisis as well as all the diplomatic, economic, constitutional and other problems we've had to endure now for the past six grueling, gruesome, dangerous years. Before someone comments on the validity of a scientific fact, they should first research it themselves. Good luck to everyone. Al Gore in 08 !

Empty Legacy

I feel empathy for Al Gore... sincerely.
He seems well meaning, but unfortunately very misguided.
The science behind anthropogenic climate change is incredibly suspect to say the least.
I hope Al Gore will find a new cause that would allow him to leave a meaningful legacy.
This is my non-political opnion...
Sincerley,

Rapid Response Team brain storming anyone?

This is the sort of thing, I think , that needs a response.

Finally!

Finally someone who see's things the way I do. Its good to know that I'm not the only person who is tired of this administration spinning truths into whatever suits them best.
Al Gore for "08!!

There are A LOT of people that are beginning to get it.

Thanks for your comment. It most definitely is "time for change." Suzanne
