AlGore -- Virginia Groups/Volunteers

in

All the Virginia volunteers working to draft Gore were so disappointed that we could not put Al Gore's name on the Virginia Democratic primary ballot.

We had so much energy and enthusiasm and had our petitions in hand, ready to hit the streets. In fact, I did hit the streets and started to gather signatures. But it did not make sense for us to spend many (many, many) hundreds of hours doing this unless Mr. Gore would be a "declared" candidate by our Dec. 14th deadline (a VA Code requirement) and sign off on the petition. We want Mr. Gore to be our president, but it is important to "conserve energy" and act "reasonably" and put our time to best use! When it became apparent that Mr. Gore would not be a declared candidate by Dec. 14th, we put the petitions aside.

So, for a few days we were really disappointed. I, for one, didn't know what to do with all my free time! I had all this energy -- and little to do. But, in the Nov. 3 issue of Rolling Stone, Mr. Gore told us...

"If I do get back involved in the political system at some point in the future - well, keep that energy stored up and let's have a go at it then."

Well... how long will I have to wait?? Will Mr. Gore really run??

Why would he tell us to store up our energy if he wasn't going to run?

Fortunately, someone asked Roy Neel (Mr. Gore's long-time political aide), who runs Gore's Nashville, Tenn. office about this. He said he has "seen no signs Gore is contemplating a race."

No signs. No signs. Is this different from no plans? Can we make something of this?

Roy Neel elaborated... "He's making no plans, and we're doing nothing."

Uh oh. We're back to that "no plans," and "doing nothing" sounds bad...

HOWEVER, before frowns set in too deep, Mr. Neel added...

"He's not ruled it out in the future."

Well, if I'm supposed to store up my energy... I hope it's not too long in the future !!! Fortunately, someone asked Roy what he means by "in the future" -- and Roy responded,

"Sometime later than today."

WHEW!! Hope it's soon, because I'm ready to campaign!!

So what do we do if we're not circulating petitions???

(1) Sign on to Mr. Gore's site

http://current.com and

post videos and comments and tell Mr. Gore why he is uniquely qualified to be our next president

(2) Write letters to the editors of your local newpapers (etc.)

(3) Send letters to Mr. Gore's office in Tenn.

(4) Sign up and keep in the loop at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AlGoreVirginiaVOLUNTEER/

I'll keep you posted as things develop....till then, hang tight!!

Best Regards,

Do Not Give Up!

Rod Bailey from Rochester, NY
Do Not Give Up. I realize time is short and you think nothing can happen between now and Dec. 14th to make Gore change his mind (assuming his mind says don't run - and we really don't know that). Here in NY we are in a race to get 5,000 valid signatures on petitions to put Al Gore's name on the Feb. 5 NY presidential primary ballot. If we get the appropriate number of signatures, Gore must affirmatively take steps to take his name off the ballot. He only has a few days to do that. So, with all those dates running fairly close together, IF you had the required number of signatures, and IF Gore does not choose to take his name off the NY ballot (assuming we get it there), then you have every reason to hope that he would finally decide to get in the race and you would still have several days to have him officially declare his name for being on the ballot - and you would have all the appropriate signatures in hand to make it happen. I realize there are a lot of IF's there, but this whole effort has been built on IF's from the very beginning. IF you give up now and Gore does decide to get in, you will have lost the chance to put him on the ballot with the required number of signatures. How would you feel then? There seem to be only a few of us really actively working in NY (we keep spreading the word, but our deadline is basically the end of November) but we keep plugging ahead. Can you do any less? DON'T GIVE UP NOW!!!

I'm sorry, sunonwater

that you felt you should stop getting signatures. Did you see Karen's email today? I hope you will reconsider and get going with all that energy you have! Even if you don't get enough signatures for the Virginia ballot, I think you and each state that has collected signatures should send their lists to Al Gore, because those are people in addition to the ones who have signed the DraftGore.com petition.

Thanks for your hard work, and try not to give up yet!

PS: Yeah, Rod!

A time of great cynicism in America

Yankee Doodle's picture

I took this off another blog. Americans are angry. Al Gore needs to stand up and and fight for our country:

"Gore abandoned us in 2000 when he didn't have the guts to stand up to the conspirators and liars. He has no right to our endorsement or our nomination now. It's too late for him, and perhaps for democracy.

He has only himself to blame for heeding his timid, mealy-mouthed, soft-handed Beltway advisors and spineless professional "Democrats" who blew the campaign; then counseled cowardice and surrender. If he'd been more like his dad and less like a DNC "realist", he'd be in the White House right now, and thousands of American and Iraqi men and women would still be alive."

What matter is how Al. is feeling about this

Virginia Group congratulations for your efferts - it might make no sense to put Al. Gore on the ballot against his will.
It is like obliging one airline traveler to replace the pilot.
If he does not feel good about this issue might be not a good idea.
He of course might do much better than Bush - anything in that office may perform better now - when the last GOP propaganda is shaking - tax return for better economy - US economy will prove that is a "Giant with clay legs", all just gonflated words to grab money - very hungry GOP no intrisic value - just words...
It might be adviceble to make a delegation of the organizers to meet Al. and discuss the issue - and find the best action procedure for US which to match his goals too.
I will be happy that he to run and becone US president as I think he might perform better than all the 16 guys running now...with all kind of fancy overnight opinions - but if he did not feel that this means any accomplishment for his allready briliant career and can not change the course of US...I have passed through this at much smaller levels and I thionk I know the feeling - please think about meeting Al. explain our opimion and let him make us understand his opinions and may be working togather into synergy.
With the best regards and all the appreciation for your efforts and good will.
Respectfully
Liviu
