Coordinating a State Convention Inside and Out

in

This weekend at the California State Democratic Convention that was held in San Diego, we had an opportunity to coordinate with several AlGore.org groups from other parts of the state to create a presence of the Al Gore movement that was felt by both the delegates and media.

Weeks before the convention, AGO members who were also delegates, began contacting each other and the AGO group located in the convention city. The convention city AGO team planned to acquire and provide as many buttons and lapel stickers as possible. Delegates brought materials and helped finance the purchase of buttons and lapel stickers. On the morning of the first day of the convention, everyone met. The host city AGO group provided the delegates with clip boards and petitions, along with buttons, lapel stickers and business cards with the AGO web link information.

Throughout the weekend, delegates sold buttons, gathered petition signatures and encouraged people to go on-line and join the AGO movement inside the convention, while the local AGO members did the same outside in the public areas and would also replenish supplies to the delegates when they ran low. On the morning of the second day, one of the AGO delegates put Gore materials on every delegate's seat before the first session began.

The media noticed. Interviews with television, Internet and newspaper journalists ensued. By the morning of the convention's third day, the local newspaper, the San Diego Union-Tribune, ran an article "Eight isn't enough, Gore is missed." CBS is taking a media crew to the next Los Angeles Gore meet-up. We were even interviewed by Los Angeles Fox affiliate.

We heard a clear message from the Democratic faithful: "We want Gore." Whether they were wearing Obama, Richardson, Kucinich, Edwards or Hilary buttons, overwhelmingly they said "if Al comes in to the race, we'll drop what we're doing and get involved in his campaign."

In the end we collected many signatures, collected enough cash to replenish supplies, shared with each other techniques that we've found that help us to be more effective. Most importantly, we made a lot of new (and old) friends.

Great Job!

It warms my heart to hear of the wonderful work done at the State Convention in San Diego.

Each of us needs to contribute in our own way and step it up a couple notches, I know I do.

Run Al, Run!

Great work

Unforuntately the only news alert I received from the Union Tribune was on a Gore/B O effort. They didn't mention any other group promoting Al Gore and it was under the title you mention "April 28, 2007 Eight isn't enough, Gore is missed" . They only talked of a group calling themselves the G O 08 and unfortunately who was every representing that group that they chose to talk about, was truly mis informed, referring to B O as someone of integrity. Only as much as Lieberman.

So, please do share what ever articles you have, I would love to see the coverage of the Al Gore Org, efforts.

We got the headline we wanted

The Gore Obama group is one of our AGO groups. It's the Corta Madera Group of California. Their coordinator is one of the delegates we coordinated with in our inside/outside strategy. Although the article was focused on the GO angle, based on our interviews with U-T reporters, we know that it was our total presence that got their attention. There were 2500 delegates. We sold or gave away 600 to 700 buttons & stickers, nearly 1500 business cards with links to AlGore.org. I haven't counted petetions yet.

Thanks,
Roy

Great News!

Gayhart,
I'm so happy to hear what you said about the people on other campains saying they will bail if Al jumps in! DO YOU HEAR THIS AL? People know the Dem Candidates are losers when it come time to pull the handle.

It would be better if we could get them to bail, BEFORE, Al Gore makes the decision to get in the race. Al, Yo Al Baby! You listening to this? I don't think you need the money or the word from people who think they have all the power from Money, Politics, or Media.

I hope Al Gore is listening, it's people power that will win this election in '08 and you know what? I think Al Gore knows, intuitively, it is too early for the election.

When everyone gets sick of all the smucks, The OWL will come out of the dark and create a tide off popularity of people sick of the same ol, same ol!

Your acticle was so inspiring!

The wind always blows, so we never have to have a President again who sucks!

We can use your help in Massachusetts

Dick Stein, Amherst, MA

I read with much interest your blog on “Coordinating a State Convention . .” and believe we might take some lessons from you. I am the co-organizer of the groups in Amherst and in Northampton, MA. We are just making plans for activities for the Democratic Mass. State convention which will occur in Amherst on May 19. Your accomplishments in San Diego are impressive and I’d like to see some parallel efforts in Massachusetts. It would be useful to obtain any additional information that you can provide. A thought is for some of us to talk with you on the phone at some convenient time. I could call you free to a land line phone using my Skype account. If you would agree to this, could you suggest some convenient time and a phone number where you might be reached. My number is 413-549-0245.

Congratulations for your great accomplishments!

Regards,
Dick Stein

I think it's important that we all share our experiences

I'm available to do whatever will help to convince Al to run, I'm sure that any of the other will be happy to help as well. I will call you.

Good. I'll look forward to hearing from you. I'll be happy to call you if you provide a phone number and suggest a time.
